Chief Executive, Brigadier (Retd) James Stopford CBE
James took over as Chief Executive in April 2016 having left the Army in December 2015 after 36 years of service. He joined the Irish Guards in 1980 and served in the full range of military appointments before commanding 'the Micks' is 1999. Post command he completed further operational tours to Northern Ireland, Iraq and Pakistan. His final appointment was as Commander British Forces Afghanistan. He is a member of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms, Chairman of the Gallipoli Association, an enthusiastic but untalented sailor and lover of all outdoor activities. Married to Michelle, a solicitor, they have 2 grown up children, Izzie a doctor and Milo, a practising vintner.
Head of Events, Rosie Thompson
Rosie has been our Head of Events for 19 years and during that time has met many thousands of veterans - all of whom inspire her. Rosie’s passions are any outdoors activity - except sailing! She has a real love of animals, especially her beloved cocker spaniel puppy, Bridie. When not working - which is rare - she is busy raising money in a variety of ways for the NFA. She has completed 24 marathons, many half marathons and several long distance challenges; and in 2017 she fulfilled a long-held ambition to successfully complete the Marathon Des Sables "The Toughest Footrace on Earth" and is now the proud owner of a much treasured Medal. Head of Finance & Executive Officer, Al Gonçalves
Al brings a wealth of financial and accounting experience gained in South Africa, the USA and the UK, particularly in the charity sector. Al ran his own accounting practice in Cape Town, South Africa, specialising in small businesses and was a co-founder of the South African AIDS Foundation. Al is an active charity volunteer and currently serves as chair of the finance committee of a Camden Town charity. His other interests include the theatre, ballet and discovering art galleries. He also enjoys travelling and exploring the many parks and green spaces in and around London.
Assistant to Head of Events and Holidays Manager, Anne McGinley
Anne joined the NFA in 1999. She previously worked for the United Nations in Geneva, New York and Damascus before returning to England as P.A. to the President of a large international record company. Anne helps Rosie to organise the NFA’s busy programme of activities, liaising with veterans’ organisations and our beneficiaries as well as representing the charity at events. She has a daughter and two stepchildren and enjoys walking, concerts, visiting museums and exhibitions.
Grants & Communications Manager, Phil Jenkins
Phil joined the NFA in 2011 and has worked in most areas of the charity. After spending some 25 years in commercial roles in the travel industry - including co-founding a tour operating business - he became a freelance marketing consultant before joining the NFA. His responsibilities include the website, social media, the Annual Review, advertising, PR and looking after our fundraisers. IT & Database Manager, Nick Jones-Evans
Nick began his career as a youth project worker in Wales in 2010 before moving to London in 2012 to work as a support worker in a homeless hostel. As well as his technical responsibilities, Nick also runs our Television Department. He has qualifications in IT and computer game development and lives in North London with his partner, Sam.
Communications Officer, Milly Garnier
Milly joined the NFA as a volunteer in August 2016 just after graduating from Bristol University. She proved so invaluable that we soon offered her a full-time role creating publicity material, developing our social media activity and assisting our Events Team. The youngest of five sisters, Milly loves spending time with her family and is a keen squash player.
Fundraising Co-ordinator, Ellen Clancy
Ellen joined the NFA in July 2017 in this new part-time role. A recent graduate of Bristol University, Ellen has moved away from her degree subject of Neuroscience to focus on the third sector. She has held similar positions at three other charities: Bristol Volunteers for Development Abroad, Nancholi Youth Organisation and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Ellen dislikes all forms of physical exercise, but is always willing to lend a helping hand especially if doughnuts are involved!
Finance and Office Administrator, Katy Scrivener
Katy is the newest addition to our team. After graduating from Leeds University in Classical Civilisation, she gained two years’ marketing experience working in the events sector and has recently returned from her travels to the Far East and Australia. Katy’s varied role includes assisting Al with financial matters and helping out with any other task at hand. She is a big lover of all things related to food and to film.
